Our Facility

A New Child Care Facility that Opened in 2018

The Yellowknife Day Care Association operates a modern child care facility that opened in 2018. The building was thoughtfully designed to provide a safe, engaging, and comfortable environment that supports children’s learning, development, and well-being.

The centre featuresnine bright and welcoming classrooms, each equipped with age-appropriate books, toys, and learning materials that support play-based learning and early childhood development. Spaces are arranged to encourage creativity, exploration, and social interaction while also providing areas for quiet play and rest.

Our licensed facility accommodates up to 104 children and includes child-sized furnishings, secure access points, and dedicated program areas designed for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. The building is fully air-conditioned to ensure children remain comfortable during the warm summer months.

The centre also includes a fully equipped kitchen where our cooks prepare fresh and nutritious snacks and meals each day.Providing healthy food is an important part of our program and supports children’s growth, energy, and overall wellness throughout the day.

Rest and quiet time are an important part of the daily routine. From 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., classrooms are transformed into comfortable nap spaces where children can rest and recharge. This quiet period helps support healthy development and ensures children are ready for the afternoon’s activities.

Health and safety remain a top priority at the centre. The facility maintains a functional Occupational Health and Safety Program and Committee, and staff regularly participate in emergency preparedness training. Fire evacuation and safety drills are practiced monthly to ensure both staff and children are familiar with emergency procedures.

The centre also includes outdoor play areas where children can enjoy fresh air and active gross-motor play as part of their daily routine. These spaces are equipped with developmentally appropriate toys, materials, and equipment for each age group, along with engaging playground play structures. Our educators also incorporate land-based play experiences, encouraging children to explore the natural environment, observe seasonal changes, and develop a connection to the land through outdoor discovery and play. The outdoor environment supports physical development, cooperative play, and meaningful opportunities for children to learn from and interact with the world around them.

Located in the welcoming community of Yellowknife, our centre is surrounded by a supportive neighbourhood and natural northern environment. We are proud to be part of a community that values families, connection, and quality early childhood care.
